Karma Quotes - Karma Sayings - What is Karma

The word karma is most often translated as meaning action. Your karma is an intentional act, something which you did on purpose. All your intentional thoughts and deeds create their own karma for which you alone are responsible.

You have thoughts or perform actions and these thoughts and actions have a powerful effect on your life. What you put out into the word, for good or bad, comes back on you.

But karma may not always be so straight forward or easy to interpret.

When you commit an act you may not know the consequences of that act immediately. If you are experiencing bad karma in your life, there may be know way to know specifically what past behavior has lead you to this path.

Karma is present throughout your life. Or through your many lives, if you believe in the cycle of rebirth.

The experience of karma may be better explained in terms of planting seeds.

Your thoughts and actions are like a series of seeds which are planted and bloom throughout your life. You will not know how long it takes these seeds to grow, but they are always growing, and you are always planting new ones.

While you may think karma is 'out to get you,' karma is a reflection of your life - what you have already done or what you are doing right now.

Taking responsibility for your actions and striving to be a giving and compassionate person can help set you on a more positive path.

Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

- Lao Tzu

According to the theory of karma, our fate is completely in our own hands. We must always be mindful of our words and deeds, for they become our character and our karma.

Crticism of Karma

Although karma can be a path for building a good and compasionate life, one criticism is that it unfairly blames people for such things as chronic illness or physical deformities.

If someone is severely injured in a car accident, how can you say that it is because of something they did in their past, maybe ten years ago, may twenty, who knows?

Traditional views of karma would say that illnesses and injuries do indeed spring from your past actions but that karma does not exist to judge these actions. However harsh karma is it ultimately serves as a means to break free.

My Thoughts on Karma

There are many interpretations of karma. Not everyone who believes in karma believes in the cycle of rebirth or that illness is a reflection of wrong behavior. I've tried to present a generally overview here, not a rigid definition.

I believe that our thoughts and our actions have a powerful effect on our lives. I believe that we are responsible for our lives and must guide them in the direction we want to go. And that if you lead your life in a positive manner, you will see positive results.

I also like to think (as many people do) that what goes around comes around. That if you treat people poorly, have a mean heart, or hurt others, bad things will come your way.Negativity is self-damaging and self-destroying by its nature.

I don't believe, however, that we are 100 % responsible for everything that happens to us. Sometimes things happen in life that are way beyond our control. Our responsiblilty lies in dealing with these events as best as we can and eventually moving forward in our lives inspite of tragedy, hardship, or loss.

These are my personal thoughts. I am not a buddhist and do not have a buddhist's understanding of karma. Whatever your personal beliefs are, I hope this article has sparked your interest.
